Have you tried really hard to do all the things that are supposed to create more happiness…
…but felt that something’s still missing? That you’ve not quite “hit the spot”?
I’ve spoken to many people over the years who’ve expressed something like that which I’ve tried to describe above; and I’ve experienced exactly this myself!
I’ve exercised, meditated, set and worked towards meaningful goals and even achieved some level fo success. I’ve practised gratitude, worked to develop optimistic thoughts and planned future activities to engender hope. I’ve developed and fostered positive relationships and participated in activities with those who have common interests. I’ve even tried laughing just for the sake of laughing!
And although all of the above paid real and measurable benefits, I’ve often felt I’m falling just short of what I’d hoped to feel.
But I think I now know the reason for this; and it’s a reason shared by many others with whom I’ve worked and talked. What is this?
The reason is that I still feel bad, guilty, upset and even angry about mistakes I’ve made it the past; people I’ve hurt; times I’ve not lived true to my values; and moments I feel I’ve behaved inappropriately.
For so long, I’ve lacked self-forgiveness and accordingly, I’ve never really felt I deserve happiness because I’m “bad”! How can we ever really thrive and flourish, enjoy true positive emotions, if we’re angry with ourselves or guilty about past misdemeanours? In short, we can’t!
…So that’s today’s mailing. Take some time to reflect upon the message and how it might apply to you. Check out, also, the links below for some additional readings and resources.
I hope it helps you enjoy some more happiness. Until next time…
Keep well & keep smiling
